Canine Influenza: What Is It?
Influenza viruses are species specific, meaning canine influenza only infects dogs. Canine influenza virus is a new disease that was discovered in racing greyhounds in 2005. It then began appearing in boarding facilities across the country, affecting personal pets. Studies show that of dogs infected 20-50% will simply make antibodies against the virus and show no clinical signs. The other 50-80% of dogs infected will get symptoms of the Flu; fever, lethargy, coughing and sneezing. Most dogs that show symptoms will recover with supportive treatment, however the virus can be shed whether the dog appears to be sick or not. Because it is a new disease with no immunity, it has the potential to spread rapidly. My Family Vet will be carrying the canine influenza vaccine to protect your furry loved one from this disease.
